What Was, What Is and What Will Come: Stories from an Apartment Building in Berlin (2025)
This exhibition is a video- and photography-based document of the apartment building at Saarbrücker Strasse 13. Through ten portraits and interviews, the stories of life in the building unfold — from the youngest resident, in their late teens, to a woman in her late eighties who was born and raised in the flat where she still lives today.
The building was constructed in the 1880s. It has borne witness to Germany’s many transformations — from the Empire and the unrest of the interwar period, through the devastation of the Second World War and the GDR years, to the decades following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Today, the façade has been restored, yet the interior still bears visible traces of time and lived experience.
The building and the people who inhabit it together form a living archive. A central theme of the project is the role of objects — the things we surround ourselves with as carriers of memory, belonging and identity. Objects have their own cycle of existence, connecting people and periods of time.
